Fish don't know they're in water - A Metaphor for Coaching.

"There are these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, "Morning, boys, how's the water?" And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, "What the hell is water?"

This opening statement to a speech by writer, David Foster Wallace, is a great metaphor to explain what coaching is all about.

Life is full of challenges and unexpected turns. Sometime we can lack insight and perspective because ‘fish don’t see water’. We are so entrenched in a situation that when we are in the thick of something, it’s hard to understand what it actually going on. Often times, it’s only when we come out of a situation that we can see what’s actually happening. Simply by pulling out a bit and examining the indisputable facts of a situation, we can gain perspective. Turning off the negative self-talk, facing the fear, opinions and criticisms and having a completely objective party, reflect back to you can often give you enough clarity to see a way out of a situation.

Once you have insight, it’s about creating a plan to move forward. To do this, you need to learn about yourself, how you respond to challenges and understand how to manage these. This is the key to moving forward. Without this insight, the knowledge and tools, you may end up just going around and around in circles without even realising that you’re in the goldfish bowl, swimming around in circles and covering the same ground. You won’t understand how to take the leap outside the bowl and into a bigger pond. This is what coaching is about, this is how coaching can help you.

So if you’re feeling lost, confused or stuck in a rut and need help making a change or moving forward with a career or life goal, then consider getting a coach. Think of it as someone who is holding a torch in front of you and helping you find your way out of the fog. In real terms, if you’re facing a life or career challenge; for example, you’re relocating, getting married or divorced, changing jobs, seeking a promotion or you want to make some positive changes in your life but aren’t sure how to go about it, then coaching might be just what you need.
